Generalized Isolation Level Definitions

چکیده
Commercial databases support different isolation levels to allow programmers to trade off consistency for a potential gain in performance. The isolation levels are defined in the current ANSI standard, but the definitions are ambiguous and revised definitions proposed to correct the problem are too constrained since they allow only pessimistic (locking) implementations. This paper presents new specifications for the ANSI levels. Our specifications are portable; they apply not only to locking implementations, but also to optimistic and multi-version concurrency control schemes. Furthermore, unlike earlier definitions, our new specifications handle predicates in a correct and flexible manner at

Towards an Isolation Level Standard
This paper proposes a new set of isolation level characterizations that are portable across implementations. That is, these characterizations are applicable to locking implementations of the ANSI-SQL isolation levels as well as optimistic concurrency control schemes. The paper also provides definitions of some additional levels that are weaker than serializability. These include the multi-versi...
متن کاملWeak Voting Database Replication Protocols Providing Different Isolation Levels
Recently, several works have taken advantage of a database isolation notion suitable for replicated approaches, called Generalized Snapshot Isolation, that provides greater performance since read-only transactions are never blocked nor cause update transactions to block or abort. However, this concept has not been formally described for replicated environments where a logical copy of the system...
متن کاملRealizability Interpretation of Generalized Inductive Definitions
Kobayashi, S. and M. Tatsuta, Realizability interpretation of generalized inductive definitions, Theoretical Computer Science 131 (1994) 121-138. Generalized inductive definitions give a way of defining a predicate as the least solution P of the equation P-A [P] where a predicate variable P may occur in a formula A[P] positively. This paper gives a q-realizability interpretation of generalized ...
متن کاملThe Heinemann-Mittermeir Generalized Shape Factor and Its Practical Relevance
Fifty years ago Warren and Root have introduced the shape factor. This fundamental parameter for modeling of naturally fractured reservoirs has been discussed stormily ever since. Different definitions for shape factor have been suggested which all of them are heuristically based. Recently, Heinemann and Mittermeir mathematically derived - based on the dual-continuum theorem assuming pseudo-ste...
متن کاملSource-Channel Coding and Separation for Generalized Communication Systems
We consider transmission of stationary and ergodic sources over non-ergodic composite channels with channel state information at the receiver (CSIR). Previously we introduced alternate capacity definitions to Shannon capacity, including the capacity versus outage and the expected capacity. These generalized definitions relax the constraint of Shannon capacity that all transmitted information mu...
